An audiobook is a book delivered as audio. In a study comparing adults who read, listened, or did both, no significant difference in comprehension was found between the groups (Rogowsky et al., 2016).
Reading with your eyes lets you set the pace and jump back freely. Listening makes both harder — and in exchange it works while you walk, cook or commute.
So the two are not ranked against each other; they cover different situations. Turning time when your eyes and hands are busy into reading time is something only audio can do.
The main reason a to-read pile stays a pile is that the time never appears. What helps there is not reading faster — it is having more hours in which reading is possible at all.

It used a single non-fiction book with adult participants. Whether the same holds for children, or for dense technical material, is not something this study can tell you.

The study above found no difference. That is not a finding that listening wins — and the opposite claim is not supported by it either.
What happens to comprehension at 1.5x or 2x is outside what that study covered. The trade-off between speed and understanding cannot be read off this result.
Books built around figures, equations or cross-referencing work badly in a linear audio stream.
A book available in English audio may never get a Japanese edition, and release timing does not line up. Whether a specific book is listenable yet has to be checked case by case.
